The design approach was to provide a space where both teenagers and adults could relax and entertain, whilst creating a minimalist low maintenance garden built around the natural beauty of the large exposed rocks.
Predominantly coastal native plants were chosen by Joanne Green, such as Coastal Rosemary, Cushion Bush, White Correa and Rosemary Grevillea. Colour was provided using different cultivars of common natives in combination with pockets of red & yellow Kangaroo Paw for highlights.
New tree plantings of Melalueca armillaris, a species that will become gnarled with age, provide their own sculptural element. A new fire pit with seating based on a circular design, was created in order to provide a gathering place for family & friends all year round. Killcare random ashlar walling was used throughout to blend with the natural surrounds, with highlights of recycled hardwood to add to the rustic feel.
One of the main features for this part of the garden already existed – the bald exposed natural rock, so it was felt that simpler plantings and hard material choice should not detract from this.
