Rather than disrupt the well-kept landscape of 1950’s and ’60s ramblers, the architects at Lane Williams chose to conform to the community design guidelines in the design of this home.

Taking cues from the mid-century modern aesthetic, Lane Williams Architects have created a home that has upped the style of the suburb. Set back from the street a terraced garden with pockets of simple mass planting and lawn softens the extra of the charcoal gray brick, cedar siding and aluminum. A series of concrete slabs, broken up with stone and moss, provide a gentle progression to the front door.

It’s only when you’re inside the house, the movement between the indoors and outdoors is revealed. The vaulted living room with its tongue and groove cedar ceiling opens the space up. Large sliding glass doors elegantly disappear into discrete wall pockets which allow the family to open up the interior spaces to the garden. It’s here where you see the property come alive.

Lane Williams Architects have designed a generous, undercover outdoor living space that extends from the family’s intimate den. A wood-burning fireplace adds to the atmosphere and connects with the interior fireplace; one of the main features. Concrete pavers wrap around a pristine lawn, ideal for kids play and connect the outdoor living areas. Making the most of the outside space, a raised jetted lap pool has been incorporated into the design, bordered by a gabion stone wall. An Ironwood deck surrounds the pool adding softness amongst the stone and concrete.

Respecting Vuecrest’s streetscape has in no way held back the creativity of this design team. If anything, the mid-century modern aesthetic has been harnessed to create a unique and playful family home.
