Tom Fereday - Glass Blocks
Tom Fereday
Part of Melbourne Design Week 2026, ‘Waste to Wonder’ brings circular design to life by commissioning three designers to transform surplus building materials into desirable objects and furniture. The exhibition reflects our ‘Crafted with Wonder’ message, demonstrating that circular design can be beautiful, functional and scalable.
Tom Fereday helped us design the original Mano Glass Block, and now he’s back reworking surplus blocks into a series of sculptural forms. In doing so, he engages directly with the idea of circularity, extending the life of a material he originally helped bring into production.
What inspired you?
I simply wanted to celebrate the natural beauty of cast glass. In Australia we have an abundance of natural light, I am fascinated by the interplay between cast glass and natural light. In particular, I was interested to present a clear, raw cast glass through a pure sculptural expression.
What surprised you about the material?
I think that the beauty of cast glass is something that I have still not gotten tired of looking at, it is an incredible material that even in the simplest of forms is intriguing and beautiful. I love the idea that this material and piece can be made and used in construction in a permanent manner, unchanged for a lifetime or more.

How was it made?
Each piece is hand assembled in Sydney with a careful consideration for a seamless sculptural expression. We wanted the collection to focus solely on glass as a material and the clear adhesive assembly is almost invisible in its construction, adding a sense of wonder around the forms. The hollow designs add to this sense of intrigue.
What’s your approach to circular design?
First and foremost, I believe we must celebrate longevity in design and natural material selection. When seeking sustainable materials, I always look for materials that will not compromise on the natural finish and integrity of a design. With recycled glass there is no compromise.
Long lasting glass
Glass is a remarkable, long-lasting material. Each Mano Glass Block is made of up to 50% recycled glass and is cast by hand, resulting in raw, uniquely textured organic surfaces.
